distant dreamer

13/05/2008

i heard this song the other day and a great big smile appeared on my face. it was a smile to say, ‘i found something new and its ace!’
its so full of hope and glorious dreams that one day will be real. It builds and builds to the point you’ve almost most packed your bags and waiting at the door to follow your dreams

escape the real world

26/04/2008

After a long day of work, I depart on my train home, tired and hungry. 15mins later I arrive to my station and there is one thing I like to do to escape the world around me and create my own. Music is mighty powerful, so I hook myself upto my small black box device of songs and depending on how I feel I select a song to suit. As I step off the train I press play and my world suddenly changes, like im part of a film. I could be returning home from an epic journey,  starting a quest, chasing someone or in the spy world of James Bond. It gives me those goosebumps everytime

I apologise for the lack of imagery but I couldn’t think of anything that would suit, you just have to experince it

i feel i should name this experince, but what hmmm……

I suggest you try it anyho

A great sadness at the mill :-(

17/02/2008

A great sadness, a wurly wurly black cloud hangs over windmill towers of late. As soon as the wind blows said cloud away, we’ll know where we are

A holiday to the 1960’s

5/01/2008

I think I’m meant to live abroad, or at least go there more. There’s something about that warmth on the wind, the dark blackness of the sea at night, the clear skies…For a few years I’ve bored those brave enough to be near me with my desires to go on holiday to the 1960’s Med.

I know if I did go back it wouldnt be how I imagine it, I see it through the lens and film of yesteryear, those slightly off vintagy colours, james bondy greens and browns

They seem much more appealing to me than the images we see in the brochures, the crystal clear images of crystal clear seas and shiny oily people…maybe if I constructed some glasses with a green filter in them all scratched to buggery?

Benches

3/11/2007

Its a little early in the day to have had 3 coffees, but alas its just been one of those days.

Looking outside my window at work im drawn to people sat on the benches, all from different walks of life, trendy chaps, older chaps, just plain old normal chaps…and right now there’s a lovely chap sat by himself, who has treated himself to a nice butty, he’s put a napkin down on his knees and is eating away so politely, occasionally looking up at people and letting his mind wander to his favorite places.

These benches, used by so many people for different reasons, so well used and respected by all. All the moments that these benches have witnessed.

Some lovely lovely benches, some moments into other worlds…

Actualy thats the only lovely bench image I can find not containing a token naked person doing an awful pose done in the hope of getting a modeling career

One piece of perfection and thats it…

12/09/2007

I was thinking today as I stood locked outside waiting for the locksmith to arrive,Mr Holland’s Opus came to mind.

I don’t know if you’ve seen this film, as I don’t know you, or know if you’ve seen the film.

Basically a young man needs to pay the rent and support his family so has to put his dream of writing the perfect opera on hold to teach music at the local school, it kills him to do this, all he wants is to have this lasting legacy, create this perfect piece of music.

Alas life gets in the way, he puts the opera on hold doing bits every now and then, he grows old and voyages through his life with all the problems and troubles that come with one, he finds 5 mins here and there to work on his opera..or opus.

Finally as an old man he’s retiring from teaching, as a final gift from all those he has influenced in his life, all his students return to perform his opus and the film ends.

This seems like the way it is for most artists (as it should be), constantly striving for this perfection, this perfect piece, we are too impatient (well i know i am) and life gets in the way…but he does it, he has to wait so long, but he does it right. He doesnt just throw out a load of crap every month that ‘would do’, he aims for this perfection that inspires people and is remembered. …and this final piece is full of his life, all his journeys, feelings, emotions, tears, sweat and blood, he has created TRUE art.

There’s a lot of people out there making ‘art’, finding a derelict building and sticking somebody in it and taking a couple of photos (myself heavily guilty) and then claiming they have created greatness… It may look pretty, it may even have a story and depth, but compared to todays ramble what they have created is mearly a piece of sand on a vast beach of sweaty all inclusive cocktail drinkers

I cant find a clip of the final opus on the beloved youtube, all I kind find is this organ rendition, which by the way is absolutly fantastic!

Trendy artists.

11/09/2007

This evenings rant is not fueled by coffee but by a small amount of whisky to loosen the finger upon the increasingly dirty keyboard.

Whilst at college it began to be trendy to have a favorite artist. As you can imagine people quickly joined the queues for Dali, escher, van gough etc. and for those trying to be particularly trendy going for andy worhol and damien hurst.

Alas all the sign up sheets for trendy artists were full, and full of rather plain boring people anyway so i decided to go on a mini adventure of salt, coffee and water colour.

The current brief being to create some stamps or something similarly thrilling I decided to get large pieces of paper and roughly draw with coffee, spill watercolour and sprinkle salt, creating some fantastic textural things…whilst the rest of the team of course used their boxes upon boxes of range upon range of pencils (who needs a range from 9h to 9b?)

These adventures in mixed media lead me by accident upon John Piper

Something fresh, full of emotion and feeling and lovely lovely texture

They seem so vibrant and full of life, rich and real and not over pretentious like the big art boys

I do hope you like these, I love them so much that one day I’d love to own one on my red wall near the log fire..ahh dreams.

Im not sure what the morel of the story is, or if there even is a morel, or even a storey.

Sleep tight

Light your fire - the third coffee

29/08/2007

Please do bear with me for this post, I have pushed the threshold seldom pushed on a Wednesday afternoon…the third coffee.

Do you have a fire within? Im sure everybody does, and if not I’m sure you can start your own with the correct wood and kindling of inspiration gathered by the Ray Mears of art.

When In the right place, at the right time, things can come together to create magical experiences that send shivers down your spine, make hairs stand on end and fill you with warmth and satisfaction, yes this sounds very much like the third coffee warmth and satisfaction but I talk of a different satisfaction, one of the soul.

I have them now and then, these wondrous occasions, I can remember them for weeks, months and even years later. One that springs to mind are disneyland fireworks.

Shown here in this youtube they are nice, but when you’re there and you feel them thundering through your body, you’re sweaty and tired from the day, your senses a little subdued almost like after a drink or two of sherry, the music, the smells, sites and colours all blend together to form this ‘thing’ I speak of.

There’s many of these ‘things’ and they can pop up anywhere…I have a desire to create these ‘things’ I’ll do what ever is required, sacrificing my own happiness,my own money, time, sweat and hair…I have burning need to create them.

Is this just me? do others share these desires? or should I talk to a professional immediately?
